How important is it to have a good first clear on Udyr?
Udyr is a power farming, snowballing jungler, who likes to full clear on repeat, as fast as possible leaving him with free time to abuse his strong 1v1s and invade the enemy. And of course all of that starts with his first clear, so make sure you do it right!
Which runes should you run on Udyr?
In order to have the fastest first clear on
Udyr you should run double
Adaptive Force as your first two options. Of course,
Health Flat would be faster compared to
Health Scaling, but we need to create a balance of what's overall good and what makes our clear fast.
Health Flat rune, while increasing your clear speed by 1 or 2 seconds early game, gets outscaled very fast, especially in the jungle role, where after your first clear the difference is almost insignificant! That's why we are sticking with
Health Scaling as our third shard option. The only other rune that is used in this guide is
Legend: Alacrity which comes from the
Precision tree, although this shouldn't be a problem, as
Udyr usually goes for
Conqueror as his primary rune choice!
What spell is best to start?

If you plan on starting a buff,
Wilding Claw is by far the best first spell option. It just deals the most single target damage. After killing the
Blue Buff and moving onto the
Gromp, skilling up
Wingborne Storm as your second ability is only logical as it is
Udyrs second damaging spell, but after that on level 3 you have to make a choice between
Iron Mantle and
Blazing Stampede. Even though
Blazing Stampede would give you more movement speed while walking from camp to camp, this isn't enough to create an important clear speed difference compared to
Iron Mantle, which will save you a lot of HP during your first clear. That is the reason why we will take
Iron Mantle as our third choice, only to put a point in
Blazing Stampede on level 4 after killing the
Krugs.
Doing Red Buff before Krugs?
In games where the lane your pathing to is not gankable, doing
Krugs before the
Red Buff is a very solid option, as you will still be in time for
Scuttle Crab - and your second clear will be more efficient, since there won't be downtime between
Raptors and
Krugs respawn timer.
Using two Smites to create an item advantage
Udyrs first clear can be significantly faster if two
Smites are used, and this is good in certain situations. Against slow clearing junglers, like
Xin Zhao, who will barely be on
Scuttle Crab on time, you can use two
Smites, immediately click
Recall, buy item components and run through mid with homeguards, only to match them on the
Scuttle Crab and win the fight! This could also be a good way to punish a
Raptors start clear.
If you chose to do something like this, I recommend using the second
Smite on
Red Buff. Also, a nice mechanic to know is that if you use your
Wingborne Storm and then
Iron Mantle and start channeling your recall, the baby
Krugs will die to the
Wingborne Storm damage, and the shield from
Iron Mantle will stop them from cancelling your recall, effectively saving you even more time!
Important mechanics & Tips:
- Prep your
Wilding Claw - using your
Wilding Claw early, gives you two stacks of bonus damage on your next attacks, then reusing your
Wilding Claw after those two attacks gives you two more instances of bonus damage - Abuse your
Bridge Between cooldown reduction mechanic - every time you cast your spell, next two attacks reduce the cooldown of your
Awaken Stance, thus you usually want to use a spell and do two attacks, then use another one
